How to Choose and Care for a Scented Candle: Wax, Wicks and Burn Time Explained
Two candles can share a shelf, a price tag and a scent name, and still behave completely differently once lit. One fills a room evenly for forty hours. The other tunnels down the middle, drowns its own wick and dies at half that, leaving good wax stuck uselessly to the sides of the jar. The difference rarely comes down to luck. It comes down to wax, wick and a handful of habits most buyers never learn.

Soy is a soft, plant-based wax that burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin, which means less soot and a longer overall burn time from the same volume of wax. Its natural scent throw runs gentler than paraffin's, so soy candles often rely on a well-matched wick and a generous fragrance load to fill a room properly rather than the wax alone doing the work.

Paraffin remains the benchmark for scent throw, since it carries and releases fragrance more readily than most natural waxes. It burns hotter than soy, which pushes scent into a room more forcefully, though it also produces more soot over time and appeals less to buyers specifically seeking a plant-based product.
Coconut Wax
Soft, Clean, Usually Blended
Coconut wax burns cleanly and holds fragrance well, but on its own it is often too soft to hold its shape reliably, which is why most coconut candles are blended with soy or another firmer wax rather than sold as pure coconut. The blend tends to combine soy's clean burn with a slightly improved scent throw.
Beeswax
Naturally Scented, Slow and Long-Burning
Beeswax carries its own faint honey-like scent, which can compete with or complicate an added fragrance rather than staying neutral. It burns slowly and for a long time relative to its size, and it commands a higher price than the alternatives, which suits buyers prioritising a natural, minimally processed candle over the strongest possible scent throw.
Wick type and why it decides more than you think
Cotton wicks are the standard choice, reliable and predictable across almost every wax type. Wood wicks burn with a faint crackle and a slightly wider flame, which some buyers choose purely for the sensory experience of the sound, and they tend to spread heat, and therefore scent, a little differently across the surface of the wax.
Wick size matters more than wick material for most practical purposes. A wick sized too small for its jar cannot melt the wax evenly across the full diameter, which is the single most common cause of tunnelling, wax hollowing out down the centre while a thick, untouched ring remains stuck to the glass. A wick sized too large burns hot enough to blacken the glass and produce excess soot. Multiple wicks exist for exactly this reason on wider candles, since a single wick simply cannot melt an extra-wide surface evenly on its own.
Sizing a candle to a room
A small votive or travel tin suits a bathroom, a hallway shelf or anywhere compact, and asking it to fill a large open-plan room will leave you disappointed regardless of how strong the fragrance claims to be. A medium jar candle handles a bedroom or a study comfortably. A large three-wick candle earns its size in an open living or kitchen-diner space, where a single-wick candle would need to run for hours just to establish a noticeable presence. Cold throw and hot throw are not the same thing
Cold throw is what you smell from an unlit candle, sniffing the wax through the jar in a shop. Hot throw is what actually fills a room once the candle is burning. The two do not always match. A candle with a beautiful cold throw can disappoint once lit if the wick cannot melt enough wax to release the fragrance properly, and a candle that seems faint unlit can surprise you once the flame has been going for half an hour. Judging a candle purely by sniffing the jar in a shop tells you less than it feels like it should.
The burn ritual that protects every hour you paid for
The first burn sets the shape of every burn after it. Let the melt pool spread fully to the edge of the glass before extinguishing, typically two to three hours depending on jar width, since a candle blown out early will tunnel down the centre for the rest of its life and waste the untouched wax along the sides permanently. There is no fixing a tunnelled candle after the fact beyond carefully melting the sides down with foil or a heat gun, so the habit is worth protecting from the very first light.
Trim the wick to roughly six millimetres, about a quarter of an inch, before every single burn. A long wick burns hotter than it should, creates a mushroom-shaped clump of carbon at the tip, and throws more soot into the room and onto the glass. Keep sessions to a maximum of around three to four hours at a time, since a wick burning far longer than that can overheat the container and shorten the candle's overall life rather than extend it. Burn away from draughts, since moving air pulls the flame sideways, causes uneven melting and increases soot considerably. Extinguish with a snuffer or a wick dipper rather than blowing, since blowing can scatter hot wax and send smoke drifting through the room.
Troubleshooting a candle that has gone wrong
Usually caused by an early first extinguish or a wick sized too small for the jar. From this point forward, always burn to a full edge-to-edge melt pool each session. Wrapping foil loosely over the top and burning for an extended session can help melt the hardened sides back down, though a badly tunnelled candle rarely fully recovers.
Often means the wick is undersized for the fragrance load, or the candle simply has not burned long enough in that session for a proper melt pool to develop. Give it a longer single burn before judging the throw as genuinely weak.
Almost always a trimming problem. Cut the wick back to six millimetres before every burn, and check for draughts nearby that could be feeding the flame more air than it needs.
Matching scent to room and mood
Fresh citrus and light florals suit kitchens and daytime spaces, where a heavier scent can feel overwhelming alongside cooking smells. Warm amber, vanilla and spice earn their place in living rooms once evening arrives, when a fuller, cosier scent reads as inviting rather than intense. The mistakes that waste the most wax
Blowing out a candle before the melt pool reaches the edge on its first burn locks in tunnelling for the rest of its life. Skipping the wick trim between burns quietly shortens both the burn time and the room's air quality at once. Judging a candle on cold throw alone in a shop, without accounting for how hot throw can differ once lit, leads to disappointing purchases that were never really the wax's fault.
